Northern Lakes Chapter/MDAA PO Box 773 Grand Rapids, MN 55744
The Northern Lakes
chapter encompasses the towns of Deer River, Grand Rapids, Warba, Bigfork,
Marcell, Talmoon, Marcell, Coleraine, Bovey, Calumet, Marble, Pengilly,
and virtually all of the rest of Itasca County. This large area also
incudes the Chippewa National Forest and more than 1000 surrounding
lakes. There is a rich history of angling and darkhouse spearing in Itasca
County. The first wave of opposition to darkhouse spearing also began here
after the designation of Deer and Moose Lakes as musky lakes in 1963. This
is also where the roots of the MDAA itself began in the mid-1980's to
combat the ever-growing stream of influence against spearing. Since that
time there has existed a locally-based pro-spearing organization known now
as the Itasca Darkhouse and Winter Angling Association. This club has our
full support in its endeavors and should not be mistaken for this, one of
the newest chapters within the Minnesota Darkhouse and Angling Assciation. The
Northern Lakes chapter was started in February, 2008 for the purpose of
making available an outlet through which the voices of Itasca County
spearers and anglers can be heard at the state level.
